HANDMADE USING PRE-COLOMBIAN TECHNIQUES
Black clay with a silvery sheen and matte finish. A small decorative vase or candleholder that is simply stunning. Hand-etched details create a mesmerizing appearance. Add your favorite dry stems, drop in a candle, or simply enjoy it alone. This is a true work of art that takes several days to finish.
A style of pottery unique to Oaxaca, barro negro is distinguished by its color and finish. It's origins date back centuries and the color is derived not from dye or glaze but from the use of special, locally-sourced clay. Every piece is hand-polished with quartz, which results in its sultry sheen.
Our pieces are produced by a family in San Bartolo Coyotepec, a community in Oaxaca with a long history of producing barro negro pottery. All clay is locally sourced from the hills of the region and handmade (no pottery wheels are used).
*Vase is decorative only. It cannot hold water.
