Oaxaca Red Clay Salad Plate
HANDCRAFTED IN OAXACA
A contemporary style of red clay, or barro rojo, handcrafted by a cooperative of women in San Marcos, Tlapazola, Oaxaca. Every red clay salad plate is shaped by hand, and finished with a clay slip which creates a uniquely textural finish.
The women-led cooperative, known worldwide as Mujeres del Barro Rojo (women of the red clay), was founded by Macrina Mateo Martinez. As a teenager, she traveled outside her village (which, as a woman, was frowned upon at the time) to find a wider audience and reach new markets, as well as expand upon the traditions and designs of previous generations. Her knowledge and experience helped the village and the cooperative thrive, and most certainly kept alive the generations-old tradition of making red pottery that continues today.
Working directly with the artisans who design and create these beautiful pieces is the best part of our job. It's a true pleasure to curate our favorite handcrafted pieces and help support the talented artists who dedicate their lives to the craft.
