HANDMADE USING PRE-COLOMBIAN TECHNIQUES
Black clay with a silvery sheen and matte finish. Our barro negro rectangular tray is a striking conversation-starter. Dress it up as a cheese board, charcuterie tray, or for serving other small bites.
A style of pottery unique to Oaxaca, barro negro is distinguished by its color and finish. It's origins date back centuries and the color is derived not from dye or glaze but from the use of special, locally-sourced clay. Every piece is hand-polished with quartz, which results in its sultry sheen.
Our pieces are produced by a family in San Bartolo Coyotepec, a community in Oaxaca with a long history of producing barro negro pottery. All clay is locally sourced from the hills of the region and handmade (no pottery wheels are used).
Dimensions: 13.5" L x 5" W
Materials: Oaxacan clay.
Care: Handle carefully. Do not microwave, use in the oven or dishwasher. To clean, carefully wipe with a damp cloth and immediately towel-dry.
