Daria Mariscal, a master potter living in the Pai Pai community in Baja Mexico, produces traditional pit-fired pottery with clay she quarries herself from nearby lands. Her designs are functional and ornamental, influenced by forms found in nature. Pai Pai pottery has been made for at least 1,000 years, the pots and pieces being burned on the ground in a kiln of dried yucca and native flora. Daria is a leader in her community, sharing her knowledge and teaching these skills to others. Through her dedication to tradition, young Pai Pai members learn their culture and history, processes that enrich and identify them as Baja Californians.
